Raw Feeding Tips for Road Trips

Dogs and owner hiking.

Are you taking a road trip with your dog this summer? Traveling with your dog can be an incredibly rewarding experience. However, for many, finding ways to bring your dog’s food on the road with you can be stressful, especially if you feed raw.

Here are a few things to consider before hitting the road with your furry friend.

Buy pre-portioned food: raw food with pre-cut portions cuts down on mess, and the time you need to have your cooler open, or a bag of raw food out in the heat.

Look for efficient packaging: sometimes bulky food packaging can let air into the crevices of your cooler, which speeds up thawing time. Well sized packaging also makes it easier to store your food in the freezer once you get to your vacation property.

Consider shipping it ahead: one of our favorite ways to get your dog’s food where it needs to be is to ship it to your destination ahead of time. This takes away the hassle of packing it yourself. If you are a Huntaway auto-ship subscriber, reach out to our customer success team if you need assistance setting up a vacation shipment (and keep an eye on your email for our exclusive free vacation shipping offer for auto-ship customers).

Find the right cooler: Using a cooler that holds all of your dogs food with little to no extra space is key. By minimizing the extra space at the top, it keeps the food colder for a longer period of time. You can also add ice packs, even dry ice, on top to ensure the food stays frozen, or add a blanket for insulation purposes.
