German Shorthaired Pointers are known for being quick, agile, and energetic. Formerly hunting dogs, they have high energy levels, require a lot of exercise, and are known for having keen noses. Learning about German Shorthaired Pointer nutritional needs can help you keep your furry friend active and happy for years to come.
If you’ve ever seen a GSP do their quintessential point, you’ll know how much work their noses do. Dogs with such high drive need proper nutrition to maintain their energy and their physical form. As dogs that are at risk for hip dysplasia, a raw diet like Huntaway can be a great choice to help support muscle maintenance and provide high quality protein to these working dogs.
Why Huntaway is a Great Choice
Healthy Ingredients
Huntaway is a biologically appropriate mixture of venison meat, offal, and bone. It also includes nutritious fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, parsley and kelp. With a moisture content of 70% and carbohydrate levels of 4.3%, our recipe is less likely to cause bloat, which certain Pointers can be at risk for. You can read more about our ingredients.
If your German Shorthaired Pointer suffers from allergies, Huntaway may be a great option as venison is a hypoallergenic and novel protein. This means that venison is a variety of protein that has not dominated our food system for a long time (like beef, pork, chicken and turkey). Given that is is "novel" to your dog, their immune systems are less likely to react with allergy symptoms, itchy skin, or hot spots.
Our raw venison recipe contains no grain, soy, wheat, corn, GMO’s, hormones or antibiotics. With Huntaway being free of harmful ingredients, and full of antioxidants, our recipe supports a long and healthy life for your pup.
Simple to Portion
Our raw dog food comes in 3 oz cubes, which makes portioning easy and mess free. To make sure you never run out, you can choose a subscription which automatically delivers orders to your door every 1-8 weeks. We have three box sizes to choose from to best suit you and your dog's needs.
Environmentally Conscious
The wild venison in our recipe is an invasive species in New Zealand. They disrupt the local environment and farm land, and currently do not have any natural predators, resulting in the population growing rapidly. By mindfully harvesting this species, and making sure no part of the animal goes to waste, there is a reduced amount of stress on the surrounding ecosystem. Making the Switch for your GSP
We recommend introducing this new food to your dog over the course of 4 weeks. For portioning, calculate 2-3% of your dog’s body weight, which is the general recommendation for how much to feed per day in ounces. This recommendation is a starting point, and should be adjusted based on activity level. For puppies or lactating dogs, please consult your vet for guidance.
To serve, put portions in the refrigerator to thaw for around 12 hours. Similarly to other raw meat, handle with care, keep Huntaway separate from your other food, and make sure to wash surfaces and bowls thoroughly with soap and warm water after your dog is finished eating. Any food that is not consumed within 30 minutes should be discarded.
